DRIVEWAYS CONTRACTOR IN BATON ROUGE

Concrete Driveways done right in Baton Rouge.

Baton Rouge is a city of very different neighborhoods, from the old oaks and narrow drives of the Garden District to newer slab-on-grade homes off Highland and Jefferson. Parish Concrete Contractors pours driveways, patios, shop pads and concrete slabs across Baton Rouge and East Baton Rouge Parish, and we price every job in writing after we've walked it.

A lot of older Baton Rouge drives were poured narrow, thin and right against oak roots, so replacing one often means tearing out, re-grading and widening rather than patching. We handle the excavation and forming, and we'll talk through roots, the apron at the street and any culvert under the drive before we price it.

LOCAL KNOW-HOW

Pouring concrete in Baton Rouge.

Most of Baton Rouge sits on the old terrace clays above the river, and that clay swells when it's wet and shrinks during a dry August. It's why you see so many cracked, heaved driveways in older parts of town, and why we care about base prep and joint spacing as much as the mix. Older neighborhoods like Mid City, the Garden District and Southdowns were built with single-car drives, shallow setbacks and big live oaks whose roots lift slabs. Newer subdivisions off Highland, Jones Creek and O'Neal tend to have HOA rules on driveway widths and finishes, so we ask about those up front. Rain is the other constant: we see heavy afternoon storms most of the year, and a lot of the parish learned in 2016 how fast water moves. Every slab we form is graded so water runs away from the house and toward a ditch, drain or yard where it belongs, not toward your slab or your neighbor's.

PERMITS IN BATON ROUGE

Building permits in Baton Rouge go through the City-Parish Permits & Inspections office (brla.gov/permits), and work in the public right-of-way, like a new driveway apron or culvert, typically needs a separate right-of-way or culvert permit through the City-Parish. On state roads such as Airline, Florida or Plank, the driveway connection falls under LA DOTD.

We handle the permits, HOA approval and 811 locates for you.

OUR PROMISE

We do make mistakes. We just fix them and leave you with a top quality product.

On a job with this many moving parts, something will eventually go sideways. When it does, you call your project manager and it gets handled. If it is bigger than that, I come look at it myself.

“We aren’t perfect. We do make mistakes, but I promise we will fix anything and leave you satisfied when done.”

KNOW BEFORE YOU POUR

Concrete Driveways, explained.

A driveway takes more punishment than any other slab on your property: daily traffic, heavy rain, and clay underneath that swells and shrinks with every wet and dry spell. Here's how we build driveways for South Louisiana ground, and what you should know before you choose a contractor.

What every driveway job includes

  • A commercial 3,500 PSI mix with fiber, included automatically
  • Excavation, framing, the pour and expansion joints where required
  • Broom, stained, or stamped & stained finishes
  • Steel highway mesh or rebar recommended if the driveway will see commercial vehicles, heavy trailers or RVs
  • Tear-out and haul-off of existing concrete available as a separate line item
What goes into a driveway that lasts on South Louisiana clay

Most of the Baton Rouge area sits on clay that swells when it's wet and shrinks when it dries. A driveway poured over soft or organic soil moves with it, and that's where cracks and sunken edges start. A lasting driveway starts underneath. We excavate to firm ground and remove what's soft. Every Parish pour is a commercial 3,500 PSI mix with fiber included, which gives the slab more strength and better resistance to the small shrinkage cracks that form as concrete cures. Expansion joints go in where the driveway meets the house, the street or other slabs, and control joints give any cracking a straight, planned place to happen.

Fiber, highway mesh and rebar: what your driveway actually needs

Reinforcement comes in different forms that do different jobs. Fiber is mixed into the concrete itself and spreads through the whole slab, helping control the shrinkage cracks that show up while concrete cures. It's included in every Parish pour. Steel highway mesh comes in heavy flat sheets, and rebar is steel bar tied in a grid. Both add tensile strength and help hold a slab together under heavy, concentrated loads. For a driveway that carries everyday cars and pickups, our 3,500 PSI fiber mix is what we pour. If your driveway will see commercial vehicles, heavy trailers, RVs or similar loads, we recommend adding steel highway mesh or rebar. We quote it as a separate add-on so you can see exactly what it adds and decide with the full picture in front of you.

Choosing a finish

Broom finish is the standard for driveways for good reason. The light texture gives tires and shoes grip when the slab is wet, and it's the simplest surface to keep clean. Stained concrete adds color to a plain slab and works well when you want the driveway to complement the house or tie into a patio. Stamped and stained concrete gives the look of stone, brick or pavers with the strength of a solid slab, and many homeowners use it on a front walk, a parking court or a border along the drive while keeping the main lanes broom finished. Stamped surfaces can be slicker than broom finish, so think about slope and shady spots. Your project manager can walk you through samples at the walkthrough.

Drainage and grade: where the water goes

In South Louisiana, a heavy afternoon storm can drop more water than the ground can take in, so a driveway has to move water somewhere on purpose. A good slab slopes away from the house and garage and toward the street, a ditch or a drain, never toward your foundation or into a low spot where water will sit. At the free walkthrough we measure the pour, shoot the grade and look at where water goes today, then set the forms so the finished driveway carries water off the right way. Our pricing assumes a typical residential lot with limited grade changes. If your property has a big grade change or a spot that holds water, we'll tell you at the walkthrough and price that work separately instead of surprising you later.

BEFORE YOU SIGN ANYTHING

How to compare concrete bids

The cheapest bid is rarely the cheapest job. Put every bid side by side and check these six things.

  1. 1
Mix strength (PSI)Ask what PSI the bid is based on and get it in writing. Many residential bids are 3,000 PSI; every Parish pour is 3,500.
  2. 2
FiberIs fiber included, or is it an extra charge? We include it in every pour automatically.
  3. 3
What's in the scopeCheck that excavation, forming, the pour, the finish and expansion joints are all listed, not assumed.
  4. 4
Tear-out and haul-offIf old concrete has to come out, make sure removal is on the bid as its own line, not left off to make the total look lower.
  5. 5
Reinforcement for your loadsIf trailers, RVs or heavy vehicles will use the slab, ask whether highway mesh or rebar is included and priced.
  6. 6
Change ordersAsk what can change the price after you sign. With Parish, only a change in scope does.
FAQ

Baton Rouge driveway questions.

Don’t see yours? Call or text (225) 399-7840 and ask a real person.

My driveway in an older Baton Rouge neighborhood is cracked from oak roots. Can you pour around the tree?

Sometimes, and sometimes the honest answer is the drive needs to move or narrow at that spot. On the free walkthrough we look at the root zone and the grade and give you options before we write the proposal.

Do I need a permit to replace my driveway in Baton Rouge?

It depends on the work, especially anything touching the street, the apron or a culvert. We'll tell you what we expect is required and you can confirm with City-Parish Permits & Inspections before we start.

Will my price change once you start digging?

No. Your proposal is one total price in writing, and it only changes if the scope changes.

Do I need rebar or wire mesh in my driveway?

For a driveway that carries everyday cars and trucks, our standard 3,500 PSI mix with fiber is what we pour, and we don't add wire mesh by default. If your driveway will see commercial vehicles, heavy trailers, RVs or similar loads, we recommend adding steel highway mesh or rebar. We quote it as an add-on so you can see exactly what it costs.

Why does it matter that you pour 3,500 PSI with fiber?

PSI is a measure of how much load the concrete can handle once it cures, and many residential bids are based on a 3,000 PSI mix. Every Parish pour is a commercial 3,500 PSI mix, and fiber is included automatically instead of being charged as an extra. Fiber helps the slab resist the small shrinkage cracks that form as it cures.

Can you tear out and haul off my old driveway?

Yes. Tear-out and haul-off of existing concrete is a separate line item on your proposal, so you can see what the removal costs apart from the new pour. Your project manager will look at the existing slab during the walkthrough and include it in the written scope.

How fast do I get a price?

For most projects, you get a Same Day Proposal after the free on-site walkthrough. It's one comprehensive scope of work with a total price in writing. And the price is the price: it doesn't change mid-job unless the scope changes.

What's the payment schedule?

A 10% deposit gets you on the schedule, 50% is due the morning of install, and the balance is due upon completion. If you'd rather spread it out, financing is available through HFS Financial with a soft credit check to prequalify.

Do you handle permits, HOA approval and utility locates?

Yes. Parish handles the permits, HOA approval and 811 utility locates for your driveway. You don't have to track down paperwork or make calls to get the job started.
