SLABS CONTRACTOR IN ST. GEORGE

Concrete Slabs done right in St. George.

St. George is East Baton Rouge Parish's newest city, covering the subdivisions and corridors south and east of Baton Rouge, from Shenandoah to Highland Road to the Amite River side. Parish Concrete Contractors is close by in Baton Rouge and pours driveways, patios, shop pads and concrete slabs across St. George.

St. George subdivision lots are mostly standard size, so a shed or pavilion pad has to fit within setbacks and your HOA's rules. Many of these neighborhoods hold water after storms, so we set the pad high enough and slope it to shed water away from the house and fence line.

LOCAL KNOW-HOW

Pouring concrete in St. George.

St. George is mostly suburban subdivisions built from the 1970s through today, and a lot of them have active HOAs with rules on driveway widths, extensions and finishes. The eastern side near the Amite River and the southern areas near Bayou Manchac took on water in 2016, and drainage is still a top concern for homeowners here. Soils are mainly clay that swells and shrinks with the weather, so older driveways in neighborhoods off Jones Creek, Sherwood Forest and Old Perkins often show cracking and heaving. Lots are mostly standard subdivision size, with some larger acreage lots out toward the parish line. Since the city now runs its own permitting, it's worth knowing which office handles your project before the work starts.

PERMITS IN ST. GEORGE

The City of St. George now runs its own Building Department, which handles building permits and has its own culvert permit application for work at the street (stgeorgela.gov). Drives that connect to state routes may also need an LA DOTD access permit.

We handle the permits, HOA approval and 811 locates for you.

OUR PROMISE

We do make mistakes. We just fix them and leave you with a top quality product.

On a job with this many moving parts, something will eventually go sideways. When it does, you call your project manager and it gets handled. If it is bigger than that, I come look at it myself.

“We aren’t perfect. We do make mistakes, but I promise we will fix anything and leave you satisfied when done.”

  • Fiber left out, or added as an upcharge
  • You only find out if you ask
KNOW BEFORE YOU POUR

Concrete Slabs, explained.

Not every slab is a driveway, a patio or a shop pad. We pour pavilion pads, shed pads and the other concrete pads around your property, built for South Louisiana ground and planned around whatever is going on top.

What every slab job includes

  • A commercial 3,500 PSI mix with fiber, included automatically
  • Excavation, framing, the pour and expansion joints where required
  • Pavilion pads, shed pads and other concrete pads
  • Tear-out and haul-off of existing concrete available as a separate line item
What goes into a pad that lasts on South Louisiana clay

A pad under a pavilion or shed sits on the same clay as everything else around Baton Rouge, and that clay swells when it's wet and shrinks when it dries. A pad poured over soft or organic soil moves with it, and whatever is sitting on top moves too. We excavate to firm ground, form the pad to the size and shape you need, and pour a commercial 3,500 PSI mix with fiber included, the same mix we use on every job. Fiber helps control the small shrinkage cracks that form as concrete cures. Expansion joints go in where they're required, and we don't add wire mesh by default. If you'd like rebar in your pad, ask your project manager and we'll quote it.

Sizing and planning a pavilion pad or shed pad

Start with what's going on the pad. For a pavilion, think about the table, the grill or the boil setup that will sit underneath with room to walk around them. For a shed, get the building's footprint from whoever is supplying it, and add any ramp or landing at the door. Bring the plans or the supplier's specs to the walkthrough, because posts and anchors may need thickened areas or footings poured with the pad. If you want lights or a fan under a pavilion, conduit has to be in place before the pour. Your project manager will help you mark the layout on the ground so you can see the real size before anything is formed.

Drainage, grade and where the pad sits in the yard

Where a pad goes matters as much as how it's poured. The back corner of a lot is often the lowest ground, and a shed or pavilion set in a spot that holds water will sit in a puddle after every summer storm. A pad should sit a little above the ground around it and slope just enough to shed water, without sending that water toward the house, a neighbor's yard or another slab. Setbacks, trees and HOA rules on sheds can also limit where it goes. At the free walkthrough we measure the pour, shoot the grade and look at where water goes today. Our pricing assumes a typical lot with limited grade changes. If the spot needs to be built up or has a big grade change, we'll tell you and price that work separately.

How to compare bids on a pad

Bids for a pad can look close on paper and be very different in what you get. Ask what PSI the bid is based on and get it in writing: many are 3,000 PSI, and every Parish pour is a commercial 3,500 PSI mix. Ask whether fiber is included or charged as an extra; ours is included automatically. Check that excavation, forming, the pour and expansion joints are listed in the scope rather than assumed. If an old slab, shed base or walkway has to come out first, removal should show up as its own line item, not be left off to make the total look lower. Finally, ask what can change the price after you sign. With Parish, the price only changes if the scope changes, and if we under-quoted, that's on us.

BEFORE YOU SIGN ANYTHING

How to compare concrete bids

The cheapest bid is rarely the cheapest job. Put every bid side by side and check these six things.

  1. 1
Mix strength (PSI)Ask what PSI the bid is based on and get it in writing. Many residential bids are 3,000 PSI; every Parish pour is 3,500.
  2. 2
FiberIs fiber included, or is it an extra charge? We include it in every pour automatically.
  3. 3
What's in the scopeCheck that excavation, forming, the pour, the finish and expansion joints are all listed, not assumed.
  4. 4
Tear-out and haul-offIf old concrete has to come out, make sure removal is on the bid as its own line, not left off to make the total look lower.
  5. 5
Reinforcement for your loadsIf trailers, RVs or heavy vehicles will use the slab, ask whether highway mesh or rebar is included and priced.
  6. 6
Change ordersAsk what can change the price after you sign. With Parish, only a change in scope does.

FAQ

St. George slab questions.

Don’t see yours? Call or text (225) 399-7840 and ask a real person.

Now that St. George is its own city, who do I get permits from?

St. George has its own Building Department now, including a culvert permit for work at the street. We'll let you know what we expect your project needs so you can confirm with the city.

Do you come out to St. George?

Yes. Our Baton Rouge shop is a short drive away, and the on-site walkthrough is free.

What's included in the price?

Excavation, forming, the pour and expansion joints are all included, and every pour is a 3,500 PSI mix with fiber. Your proposal is one total price, and it only changes if the scope changes.

What kinds of pads do you pour?

Pavilion pads, shed pads and other concrete pads around your property that aren't a driveway, patio or shop pad. If you're not sure whether your project fits, call us and we'll tell you straight.

How fast do I get a price?

For most projects, you get a Same Day Proposal after the free on-site walkthrough. It's one comprehensive scope of work with a total price in writing, and that price doesn't change unless the scope changes.

How big should my pavilion pad be?

It depends on the pavilion and how you'll use the space underneath. Bring the pavilion plans or dimensions to the walkthrough, and we'll help you mark the pad out on the ground so you can see the real size before anything is formed.

Should the pad go in before my shed or pavilion is built?

Yes, the pad comes first. Get the footprint and any post or anchor requirements from your shed or pavilion supplier ahead of time so the pad is built to match.

Do I need rebar in a pad?

Every pad is poured with a commercial 3,500 PSI mix with fiber included, and we don't use wire mesh by default. Rebar is quoted on request, and your project manager will talk through whether it makes sense for what's going on the pad.

Can you remove an old slab or shed base first?

Yes. Tear-out and haul-off of existing concrete is a separate line item on your proposal, so you can see what the removal costs apart from the new pour.

What's the payment schedule?

A 10% deposit gets you on the schedule, 50% is due the morning of install, and the balance is due upon completion. If you'd rather spread it out, financing is available through HFS Financial.

Do you handle permits, HOA approval and utility locates?

Yes. Parish handles the permits, HOA approval and 811 utility locates for your pad, so you don't have to track down paperwork before the job gets started.
