The Most Important Part of a Shop Pad?

The concrete footings your shop plans call for.

Shop plans require specific concrete footings to ensure the concrete slab can properly support the future structure that will be built on it.

LOCAL KNOW-HOW

Pouring concrete in Baker.

Because so much of Baker was built decades ago, many of our conversations here are about replacing original concrete that has cracked, settled or broken up around the edges. Older drives were often poured thinner and without much base, and the clay soils here have had years to shift underneath them. Lots in Baker are generally a good size, with carports, side yards and room for a back slab or small shop. Drainage leans on roadside ditches and culverts on many streets, and low spots near the house are common where the yard has settled over time. When we replace old concrete, we take out the old slab, rebuild the base, re-set the grade and pour new, rather than covering up the problem.

OUR PROMISE

We do make mistakes. We just fix them and leave you with a top quality product.

On a job with this many moving parts, something will eventually go sideways. When it does, you call your project manager and it gets handled. If it is bigger than that, I come look at it myself.

“We aren’t perfect. We do make mistakes, but I promise we will fix anything and leave you satisfied when done.”

KNOW BEFORE YOU POUR

Shop Pads, explained.

A shop, barn or garage is only as good as the pad it sits on, and a building pad has to be right before the first wall goes up. We plan shop pads around your building and the way you'll use it, then pour them square, level and ready for your builder.

What every shop pad job includes

  • A commercial 3,500 PSI mix with fiber, included automatically
  • Excavation, framing, the pour and expansion joints where required
  • Rebar quoted on request
Start with your building plans

A shop pad isn't just a big patio. It has to match the building exactly, so the best time to call us is once you've picked a building and have its drawings. Metal building suppliers and builders typically provide pad dimensions, door and opening locations, and an anchor bolt plan showing where every bolt goes and how far it sticks up. Some buildings also call for thickened edges or footings at the columns. We use those drawings to lay out and form the pad. If you don't have plans yet, we can still walk the site, talk through size and placement, and help you understand what your supplier will need from the pad before you order.

Planning for equipment and heavy loads

Think about the heaviest thing that will ever sit or roll on the floor: a tractor, a loaded trailer, a skid steer, a boat, or a car lift. Concentrated loads like lift posts and trailer jacks put a lot of pressure on a small area, and many lift manufacturers publish minimum slab requirements. Every Parish pour is a commercial 3,500 PSI mix with fiber included, which helps control shrinkage cracking across a large floor. For heavier equipment, rebar may make sense, and we'll quote it on request. Tell us at the walkthrough what's going in the building, now and later, so the pad is built for the way you'll really use it.

Pad height, grade and water

In South Louisiana, where your pad sits relative to the ground around it matters as much as the concrete itself. A building floor should sit high enough that heavy rain runs away from the doors instead of under them, and the area in front of overhead doors should slope away from the building. Big flat lots can hide low spots that only show up in a storm. At the free walkthrough we measure the pour, shoot the grade and look at where water goes today. Our pricing assumes a typical property with limited grade changes. If the building pad needs to be raised or the site has a big grade change, we'll tell you up front and price that work separately so nothing comes as a surprise.

Finish and inside details

Shop floors take oil, tools, tires and boots, so a finish that's easy to sweep and clean makes a big difference. Broom finish gives better grip anywhere the pad gets wet. Before the pour is also the time to plan anything that runs under the floor. Plumbing for a bathroom or sink, electrical conduit to a workbench, and floor drains all have to be roughed in before concrete goes down, and your plumber or electrician will need to be scheduled ahead of us. Expansion joints go in where required, and joint placement is planned around how you'll use the floor.

BEFORE YOU SIGN ANYTHING

How to compare concrete bids

The cheapest bid is rarely the cheapest job. Put every bid side by side and check these six things.

  1. 1
Mix strength (PSI)Ask what PSI the bid is based on and get it in writing. Many residential bids are 3,000 PSI; every Parish pour is 3,500.
  2. 2
FiberIs fiber included, or is it an extra charge? We include it in every pour automatically.
  3. 3
What's in the scopeCheck that excavation, forming, the pour, the finish and expansion joints are all listed, not assumed.
  4. 4
Tear-out and haul-offIf old concrete has to come out, make sure removal is on the bid as its own line, not left off to make the total look lower.
  5. 5
Reinforcement for your loadsIf trailers, RVs or heavy vehicles will use the slab, ask whether highway mesh or rebar is included and priced.
  6. 6
Change ordersAsk what can change the price after you sign. With Parish, only a change in scope does.

FAQ

Baker shop pad questions.

Don’t see yours? Call or text (225) 399-7840 and ask a real person.

Can you pour new concrete over my old cracked driveway?

We don't recommend it. Old concrete keeps moving underneath, and the cracks come right back through. We remove it, fix the base and pour new.

My carport slab is lower than the yard and holds water. Can you fix that?

That's one of the most common things we see on older homes. On the walkthrough we look at the grade around it and include a plan to get the water moving in the right direction.

Are you insured?

Yes. Parish Concrete Contractors carries $2,500,000 in general liability and workers' comp coverage, and we're locally owned with our shop in Baton Rouge.

What do you need from my building supplier?

The building drawings, especially the pad dimensions, door and opening locations, and the anchor bolt plan. If your building calls for thickened edges or column footings, those details will be on the drawings too. The more complete the plans, the faster and more accurate your proposal.

Do you set the anchor bolts?

Getting bolts right is one of the most important parts of a shop pad, because the building frame has to land exactly on them.

Will the pad hold a car lift or heavy equipment?

It can if it's planned for it. Lift manufacturers usually publish minimum slab requirements, so share the specs for your lift at the walkthrough. Every pour is a 3,500 PSI fiber mix, and we can quote rebar or a thicker section where heavy loads will sit.

Is rebar included in a shop pad?

Fiber is included in every pour, and we don't use wire mesh by default. Rebar is quoted on request, and it often makes sense for pads carrying heavy equipment, trailers or lifts. Your project manager will talk through it with you based on what's going in the building.

How fast do I get a price?

For most projects, you get a Same Day Proposal after the free on-site walkthrough. It's one comprehensive scope of work with a total price in writing. Having your building drawings ready at the walkthrough helps.

How soon can my builder start putting up the building?

Concrete keeps gaining strength for weeks after the pour. Your project manager will give you timing so you can schedule your builder.

What's the payment schedule?

A 10% deposit gets you on the schedule, 50% is due the morning of install, and the balance is due upon completion. The price in your proposal is the price unless the scope changes, and if we under-quoted, that's on us.

Do you handle permits and utility locates?

Yes. Parish handles permits, HOA approval where it applies, and 811 utility locates before we dig. That's especially important on rural lots where buried lines aren't always where you'd expect.
